- atoms in smaller inorganic molecules joined by strong bonds (release lots of energy when formed, and require lots to break), organic molecules have many more bonds (but are weaker, so less energy to break, and less released when formed)

- in respiro, amount of energy to break bonds in OM less than energy release when bonds form in IM, so excess energy released when bonds form used to form ATP

- OM made up of lots of C-H bonds (non polar so not much to break), the C and H atoms released form strong bonds with O2 which is why energy released
