NAD and FAD accept H+ and electron pairs but differ in their involvement (NAD in all steps, FAD only in Krebs Cycle), H+ acceptance capacity (NAD accepts 1, FAD accepts 2), timing of oxidation in the ETC, and ATP yield (NAD forms 3 ATP, FAD forms 2 ATP).
Front | differences between NAD/FAD |
---|---|
Back | NAD/FAD both accept H+ and e- pair from breakdown of glucose, but different in some ways; - NAD involved in all respiro steps while FAD only in KC - NAD accepts 1 H+ while FAD accepts 2H+, reduced NAD oxidises at start of ETC (releasing H+ and e- pair) while reduced FAD oxidises at a later stage - reduced NAD forms 3 ATP molecules while FAD forms 2 ATP molecules |
