Seed Gibberellins Evidence Role Embryo Food Stores Gib

Front seed germination and evidence for role of gibberellins
Back
  • seed needs to be germinated to start growing
  • when seed absorbs water, embryo activates and forms gibberellins (stimulate prod of enzymes breaking down food stores in seed (amylases and proteases)), the embryo plant uses food stores to form ATP to build materials to grow/break through seed coat, ABA acts as antagonist to gibberellins (inteferes with action, so both relative levels determine when germinates)
  • Evidence for role of gibberellins;
    • if mutant seeds (that dont code for gibberellins) or gib biosynthesis inhibitors applied (gibs not made), seed doesnt germinate, and do so once gib added externally
