- supported by cartilage (strong, flexible, incomplete rings) to stop teachea collapsing and allowing food to pass easily behind trachea (oesophagus) 

- Lined with ciliated epethilium with goblet cells between and below (secreting mucus to trap dust escaping nose, cilia moves it to throat away from lungs)
