Notes | Applies to: verb and adjective stems ending in ㅂ Adjective examples: 덥다 warm 가깝다 near/close Verb examples: 눕다 to lie down 여쭙다 to tell (to a superior) Special cases: 돕다 to help 곱다 pretty, stiff/numb with cold 굽다 bent/crooked, to grill Exception examples: 좁다 narrow 입다 to wear 씹다 to chew 뽑다 to pull out ㅂ in the stem changes to 우 if the attached ending begins with a vowel. The principle is then added in accordance with regular conjugation rules for stems ending in a vowel. In particular, the -(으)~ part is dropped from principles such as -(으)면 or -(으)니까. ㅂ changes to 오 only in the case of 곱다 and 돕다 and only when the -아/어~ type of ending is attached. When 곱- and 돕- are followed by any other vowel different from ㅏ and ㅓthe above mentioned rule ㅂ → 우 takes place. |
