Notes -(으)면 attaches to verb or adjective stems and has the basic meaning of 'if'. -(으)면 can convey the meaning of 'when' in clauses describing situations that are certain to occur, i.e., situations that are not hypothetical.

-(으)면 can occur preceded by the past and the future tense markers; the pattern can be followed by the topic marker -은.
In sentences like 'A(으)면 B', -(으)면 marks the hypothetical or certain condition A for the event or state B to take place.
There are three main usages of -(으)면 as a connective principle in two-clause sentences.

-(으)면 marking hypothetical conditions in expressions of supposition or assumption.
-(으)면 marking general conditions for the event in the second clause to occur.
-(으)면 marking repeating conditions for the event in the second clause to occur.
