Notes | -지만 is the most universal can common contrastive connective that corresponds to 'but' in English. -지만 conveys the meaning of strong opposition between the two sentence parts it connects. These parts describe contrasting or contradictory situations. -지만 attaches to adjective, verb stems, or to the copula. The principle can be used preceded by the past -았/었- and by the future -겠- tense markers. The contrast marker function of -지만 has three distinct applications: marking contrast between two clauses with different subjects; marking the less significant contrasting part; marking a starting phrase in polite expressions. |
