Notes -지만 is the most universal can common contrastive connective that corresponds to 'but' in English. -지만 conveys the meaning of strong opposition between the two sentence parts it connects. These parts describe contrasting or contradictory situations.

-지만 attaches to adjective, verb stems, or to the copula. The principle can be used preceded by the past -았/었- and by the future -겠- tense markers.

The contrast marker function of -지만 has three distinct applications:
marking contrast between two clauses with different subjects;
marking the less significant contrasting part;
marking a starting phrase in polite expressions.
