Isolated Product Organisms Wasteful Desired Explain Enymes Preferred

Isolated enzymes are preferred over whole organisms in biotechnology because they are less wasteful, more efficient, more specific, allow for maximized efficiency, and require less downstream processing as they produce a pure product rather than a mixture of substances.

  • More specific - no wasteful side reactions will take place
  • Maximising efficiency - they can be given optimum conditions for maximum product formation
  • Less downstream processing - pure product is produced by isolated enzymes, microorganisms give variety of products in broth making harder to isolate
