Protein Microorganisms Food Produce Make Waste Costs Conditions

This flashcard aims to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using microorganisms to produce food for human consumption. Advantages include rapid reproduction, high protein content, cost-effectiveness, and independence from weather. Disadvantages involve potential toxin production, the need for sterile conditions, and public concerns about GMOs.

Front Describe advantages and disadvantages of using microorganisms to make food for human consumption.
Back Evaluating use of microorganisms in food production:

Advantages:
  • Reproduce fast and produce protein faster than plants and animals
  • High protein content, little fat
  • Can use wide variety of waste materials, reducing costs
  • Can be genetically modified to produce required protein
  • Production not dependent on weather, breeding cycles, etc, can be increased or decreased to meet demand
  • No welfare issues
  • Can be made to taste like anything

Disadvantages:
  • Some produce toxins if conditions not maintained at optimum
  • They have to be separated from nutrient broth and processed to make food
  • Need sterile conditions that are carefully controlled - costs
  • Often involve GM organisms, many concerned with eating GM
  • Protein must be purified to ensure no toxins/contaminants
  • People dislike eating microorganisms grown on waste
  • Little natural flavor, require additives
