Single Double Circulation Blood Flows Heart Similarities Differences

Front Draw a table to show the similarities and differences between single and double circulatory systems.
Back Single and double circulation:

SimilaritiesDifferences
  • Both are types of closed circulation - blood stays enclosed in vessels and does not come into direct contact with tissues
  • Both have exchange occur at capillaries
  • Both involve a pumping organ
  • Blood flows thru the heart once for complsoeting one circulation in single circulation, in double it flow thru the heart twice for completion of one circulation
  • In single circulation the heart consists of two chambers, in double it is 3 or 4
  • In single circulation oxygenated blood flows directly from source of oxygen (gills) to capillaries, in double circulation oxygenated blood flows from lungs into the heart and then into the body
  • Single occurs in fish, double occurs in frogs, reptiles, birds and mammals
  • Blood is at lower pressure in single circ
  • Pulmonary circulation is absent in single and present in double
  • Blood flows at higher pressure & therefore more rapidly than in single
