Soil Conditions Species Organic Humus Water Describe Change

During succession, soil changes: rocks weather into smaller particles, humus accumulates, improving water retention and nutrients, while pH decreases due to acidic humus.

Durante la successione, il suolo cambia: le rocce si sgretolano, l'humus si accumula, migliorano la ritenzione idrica e i nutrienti, mentre il pH diminuisce a causa dell'acidità dell'humus.

Front Describe how the conditions of the soil change as succession occurs.
Back Changing conditions of the soil:
  • Weathering of rocks produces smaller particles that form basis of soil
  • Pioneer species die and decompose, releasing small organic products into soil, forming humus
  • Soil can now supprot growth of new species of plant bc it contains minerals (nitrates) & is able to retain water
  • Over time rock is eroded, mass of organic matter increases, soil gets more nutrients and improves water retention
  • pH decreases because humus is increasingly acidic
