L'inspirazione comporta la contrazione dei muscoli intercostali esterni e del diaframma, l'innalzamento ed estensione della gabbia toracica e l'appiattimento verso il basso del diaframma, che aumenta il volume toracico e diminuisce la pressione, causando l'ingresso di aria nei polmoni.
