Expiration involves the relaxation of external intercostal and diaphragm muscles, elastic recoil, and subsequent downward and inward movement of the rib cage and upward movement of the diaphragm, decreasing thoracic volume and increasing pressure, causing air to move out of the lungs.

Back | - external intercostal muscles relax - elastic tissue recoils - ribcage moves downwards and inwards - diaphragm muscle relaxes - diaphragm pushed upwards by abdominal contents - thorax volume decreases - thorax pressure increases - air moves out of lungs into atmosphere down pressure gradient |
