Sudan Iii Sample Food Test Tube Stain Solution

To perform the Sudan III test, place 5 cm³ of food sample in a test tube, add 3 drops of Sudan III stain solution, and shake gently. Sudan III stains lipids; if lipids are present, a distinct bright red top layer will form. If not, no separate red layer will appear.

  1. Prepare 5 cm3 sample of food into a test tube
  2. Use a pipette to add 3 drops of Sudan III stain solution to the test tube and gently shake the tube.
  3. Sudan III stain solution stains lipids.
  4. If the food sample contains lipids, the mixture will separate out into two layers. The top layer will be bright red.
  5. If no lipids are present, no separate red layer will form at the top of the liquid.
