Structure: fat-filled layer of connective tissue beneath the dermis, varies widely in thickness. Contains:
1. nerves, vessels, lymph nodes
2. adipose tissue
3. collagenous connective tissue septa (skin ligaments) that connect dermis to deep fascia and divide fat into lobules.

Function:
1. Contouring of body
2. Protective padding
3. Insulation
