Structure: has no vertebral body, very small bifid spinous process, and no intervertebral discs. Articulates directly with the skull and the axis (C2)

Function:
1. Atlanto-occipital joint allows "yes" movement (flexion/extension)
2. Atlanto-axial joint allows "no" movement (rotation)
