1) Operate Unconsciously
2) Distort Reality

Defense mechanisms:

1) Repression - Unconsciously forcing thoughts from memory
2) Suppression - Consciously forcing thoughts from memory
3) Regression - reversion to earlier state
4) Reaction Formation - urges opposite
5) Displacement - an emotion is presented to a person that did not elicit the emotion
6) Projection - undesired feelings held by someone are distorted into emotions felt by someone else
-thematic apperception test - series of picture presented to client who creates a story
-Rorschach inkblot test - client projects his unconscious feelings onto shapes 
7) Rationalization - justifying behaviors acceptably
8) Sublimination - unacceptable urges transformed to socially acceptable behaviors
