SCIDS (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Syndrome) occurs because children lack the enzyme ADA, crucial for T and B cell maturation, leading to life-threatening infections. Treatment involves infecting bone marrow stem cells with a retrovirus carrying the normal gene for ADA and returning them to the patient.
