Allele Gene Therapy Somatic Functional Cells Pass Offspring

Gene therapy is a treatment that replaces a mutated gene with a healthy one to treat diseases. Somatic cell therapy is not heritable, whereas germline therapy is heritable but illegal due to potential misuse.

Front Gene therapy
Back
  • some diseases (e.g cystic fibrosis, which causes lung infections and limits breathing ability) result of faulty (mutant) genes
  • Somatic cell gene therapy - replacing mutant allele with healthy alele in somatic (body) cells so functional allele doesnt pass onto offspring,
  • Germ line gene therapy - functional allele added to gametes so all somatic cells contain functional allele so can pass onto offspring, illegal - to prevent parents choosing offsprings characteristics
