Dialysis Donor Kidneys Shortage Comparing Transplants Readily Requires

Dialysis is more readily available but requires strict dietary monitoring and multiple machine sessions, is more expensive long-term, and can damage the body. Donor kidneys primarily come from those who die suddenly, but there is a shortage due to fewer registered donors and fewer car accidents. In the future, kidneys may be grown from stem cells, potentially without antigens.

Front Comparing dialysis and transplants
Back
  • dialysis more readily available, but requires close monitoring of diet and multiple machine sessions, also long-term dialysis more expensive than transplant and can damage body
  • donor kidneys mainly sourced from people who suddenly die, but shortage of donor kidneys as; shortage of registered donors, better cars so less road deaths and less donors
  • in future, could grow embryonic kidney tissue from stem cells, particularly without antigens to prevent immune response
