Kidney Risk Immune System Antigens Treating Failure Transplants

Kidney transplants involve placing a healthy kidney into the body, connecting its blood vessels and ureter to the bladder. The main challenge is immune rejection, which is managed by matching antigens and using immunosuppressant drugs, although these drugs also weaken the body's overall defenses.

Back
  • single healthy kidney placed within body, blood vessels joined and ureter of new kidney inserted into bladder
  • main problem is risk of rejection, as immune system likley to detect antigens on donor organ as different to that of recipient, which can lead to destruction of kidney, reduce risk of rejection; by matching antigens of donor/recipient, immunosuppressent drugs to suppress immune system (but hinders bodies defence against disease)
