Gm Yield Resistence +Ve Ve Soya Transfer Insect

This flashcard details the pros and cons of genetically modified (GM) soybean plants, focusing on their resistance to pests and herbicides, and the implications of patents on technology transfer, particularly for developing countries.

El flashcard detalla las ventajas y desventajas de las plantas de soja modificadas genéticamente (GM), su resistencia a plagas y herbicidas, y las implicaciones de las patentes en la transferencia de tecnología, especialmente para los países en desarrollo.

Front GM plants; soya beans, Ads/disads, patenting/technology transfer
Back
  • insect resistence in GM soya beans - in one GM strain, gene inserted coding for BT protein (toxic to pest insects, so pesticide), another GM strain resistent to weed killer while coding for BT protein (pesticide and survives weed killer) which have higher yield, lower costs and labour
  • Advantages/Disadvantages
    • pest resistence - +ve; less pesticide sprays which protect envro, also increases yield, -ve; non-pest insects and their predators affected by the toxins and insect pests may become resistent
    • disease resistence - +ve; increase yield, -ve; transferred genes can spread to wild pops and cause problems
    • herbicides - +ve; reduce competing weeds and inc yield, -ve; dec biodiversity
  • Patenting and technology transfer
    • people in LEDCs may be not be able to use GM crops (that they need the most), patenting will also prevent harvesting one seed from 1 year to plant the next
