Skin Surface Blood Cools Increased Insulating Cooling Endotherms

Front cooling down in endotherms
Back
  • responses to an increase to core temperature
  • vasodilation (arterioles near skin surface dilate, arteriovenous shunt vessels (vessels directly between arterioles and venules) constrict, which forces blood through capillaries close to skin surface, skin flushes and cools as result of increased radiation
  • increased sweating (sweat spreads accross skin surface and evaporates, which cools blood below surface)
  • reducing insulating effect of hair/feather (erector pili muscles (hair erector muscles) in skin relax, so hair/feathers lie flat (avoids trapping insulating layer of air))
