Parasympathetic Sympathetic Antagonistic System Define Describe Relates Nervous

An antagonistic system is one where one action inhibits another. The sympathetic and parasympathetic systems are antagonistic, with the sympathetic system usually stimulating fight or flight responses and the parasympathetic system counteracting them, like increasing and decreasing heart rate, respectively.

Front Define antagonistic system & describe how this relates to parasympathetic & sympathetic nervous systems.
Back Antagonistic system - where one action inhibits another
  • Sympathetic and parasympathetic systems behave in this way
  • Sympathetic usually stimulates fight or flight responses & parasympathetic acts to counteract these changes
  • E.g. sympathetic increases heart rate, parasympathetic decreases it
