  • Can be due to kidney infection (podocytes/tubules damaged), inc blood pressure (damages epithelial tissue/basement membrane) and genetic conditions
  • Infection/high blood pressure effects
    • protein in urine - basement membrane/podocytes damaged and cant filter LPP, which passes into filtrate and into urine
    • blood in urine - due to same disabled filtering process
  • Effects of kidney failure
    • concs of mineral ions/urea build up in body so;
    • loss of electrolyte balance - lack of secretion of XS Na+, K+ and Cl- result in osmotic imbalances in tissues
    • build up of urea in blood - XS urea in blood can poison cells
    • high blood pressure - blood pressure increases which can lead to diseases
